I've been messin around with recording as a hobby all my life. I've been using a Tascam 244 PortaStudio and Cakewalk 6.0 on my computer, and have come into a little bit of cash. I want to set up a semi vintage analog studio in my basement, and have my eye on an MCI JH-24 2" 24 track, and an MCI 600 series console that a studio I know is selling cause their going out of business. They also have some decent outboard stuff like a couple of LA3s, API mic preamps, Lexicon PCM 42 digital delay, and a PCM 60 digital reverb. I would like to buy an analog reverb and have been looking into an AKG BX 20 or a plate like an EMT or an Ecoplate. I read a post a RAP about a guy at ProSoundWeb with scans of an old article he wrote telling how to build one. He also has some MP3 files so you can hear how a plate built using the article sounds. If you want to check it out, here is the link . They sounded pretty good to me. Some guy, Cold Rolled said he had an EMT, and he said that the MP3s sound better than his EMT and way better than any plate he ever built using his own design. Has anybody tried to build one of these yet? I hear TapeOp is reprinting this article in the next issue. Should I try building one, or should I keep looking for an old EMT or Ecoplate?

I won't get into the reverb thing but if you just came into the cash I might think twice about buying an old MCI console and 2" deck. While they'll sound great, they'll only sound great if they work. And that takes money to get them in shape and keep them there. Trust me, I own a 14 year old console and a 20 year old JH-24. Also, expect your power bill to shoot way up after installation because they like to be on 24-7. Turning old gear like that on and off invites all kinds of problems.
