My latest recording and mix down

I still struggle with getting my Mando like so sound as good as is does live. It was recorded with my pickups thru an LR Baggs DI. It seems closer than using my large diaphragm mic. Maybe a ribbon mic is next purchase. So damn spendy

I eq it by boosting the lows cutting mids and highs just a touch

Your right bass heavy. Will adjust

Funny you said pulling right. That’s my bad ear! Had a stapendextomy on that ear Not what it once was!

A few tools can switch sides around for spot checking, that could help you maybe.. Altought it's just at the beginning of the song.. it could be taken as a creative choice ;)

OK....I'v e been trying to learn Reaper DAW. This is my first try in mixing using a DAW. Damn its a bit overwhelming with all the options using Reaper. Every song to date has been just mixed on my Tascam DP 32 Digital Recorder. I used volume automation on instruments, back the bass low end a bit as suggested..might not be enough still...and tried to fatten the lead vocal by making three copies...two with micro shift applied and one with a touch of distortion..the copies volume down to blend and not overtake it. I EQ'd the highs off the mando more also. Any comments comparing to the first run welcome. Thanks all...

When you come back down Reaper Track Mix v3.mp3 (3.3 MB)

I like the song very much... Nice and clean, good dynamics. Good job on the performances.
I feel the mix need more hi-frequencies or less low-mids. But it could be an artistic choice of making the song sounds retro.
If it's not the case, if you have a spectrum analyser, put it on the master buss and try to aim at a response similar to a pink noise.. This is a good starting point.
My personnal taste of course..

Not sure if it helps, but I prefer the first one - mainly because the vocals in V2 are more up front and somehow a bit less defined and thinner?

I quite like the sound of the mandolin to be honest. I personally wouldn't buy a mic to try to improve it. I wonder if the issue is that you hear the live sound and like it, but that's looking down on the instrument and hearing what reflects back from what goes forward? Maybe you've captured it perfectly and this is what it really does sound like to everyone else, but not to you? A bit like when you record a brass player and they say it doesn't sound like them because they can never hear what the audience hear? Could this be a problem that isn't really a problem?

Thanks! I agree with you after comparing the two. My efforts using Reaper and all those vocal fattening tricks I read about made a harsher sounding lead vocal. The learning continues. And your comments on the mandolin is interesting.
