Hi everyone,

”No time to say goodbye” is one of the first songs that I recorded after I bought my ”first DAW” a few years ago. I was never happy with the mix / performances but I thought the song itself was quite good, 60’s kind of vintage song. So - I decided to re-record this song and do some changes to the arrangement / instrumentation.
Everything is recorded in my home studio by myself using Logic X, Kel HM-7U mic, Apogee Duet interface, GAP Pre 73 preamp, Gavin gtr and a lot of different plugins.

This is the first mix of this song, not mastered, but I used some eq, compressor (1-2 db), tape sI'm in the mix bus + limiter to raise the over all level to peak at 0,5 dbfs max.

So - I’d appreciate any kind of feedback about the mix, levels, tones, performances what ever that could help me to improve my mix. If anyone would like to compare this new version to the original, just listen to the original mix behind soundcloud.com/splproject/no-time-to-say-goodbye-new-mix (copy this link to your browser)

Hi Mike !
Thank you so much for explaining your thoughts.

Fix this mix is a section where we discuss how a mix could be better. Mixing is the action of taking the individual recorded tracks and manipulate them so they become a whole that make sens and serve the song. Taking the stereo mix and manipulate it tends to be the mastering role.
Unless the OP offers the RAW individual tracks, FIX THIS MIX, is more a guidance thing. You can explain what you hear and suggest correction but the song usually needs to be reworked by the OP (if needed or if he's willing). Some OP don't want to modify the mix they post but they want to know what's wrong with it to avoid doing the mistakes again. I prefer when the mix is not final and it's fun and rewarding to hear different version up to the final mix.. but that's just me ;)

That says, ear training is one of the most important thing about recording. How could we dissern right from wrong otherwise ? Right...
That would be a GREAT thread to start on your own. Something like (How can I train my ears ? )
I'm sure many members would be happy to discuss that subject (y)

I also appreciate you explaining what you were doing. No biggie. Marco gave a great description of what this section is about. Most of RO is kinda founded on a Problem-Based Learning vibe, (some of us refer to it as "PBL" for short) where members can present problems ( any) they are having with their audio-related projects, and are seeking advice from other members on how to best approach resolving those issues. It could be critiquing a mix, as this section focuses on, or it could be in tracking phases; gain-staging, mic'ing, wiring and routing, even room acoustics /isolation treatment, or gear repair and DIY build projects.

We have a pretty bad-ass support system here, made up of some wicked-intelligent people; recording and mix engineers who are approaching their 10, 20, 30, and some even their 40 year mark in the business; we have designers and builders of gear, room acoustics pro's, computer / DAW experts - in many different formats - here you'll find guys who use Reaper, Reason, Ableton, Pro Tools, Sonar, Samplitude, Studio-One, Logic, and several other platforms...we have members who are reclaiming old analog consoles and outboard gear and bringing them back to session condition; we have both analog guys and digital guys, hybrid engineers, Live/FOH engineers, great musicians, writers, producers and arrangers in many different styles, midi programming pro's, microphone and placement/array guys, .... it's a long list of very experienced and qualified members - who give of their time - and for free - all in an effort to help others.

Pleased don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have... that's why we're here. ;)

Welcome to RO. :)

Dig this mix! I would take the chorusing effect on the vocal down a bit for the beginning to make it more simplistic and edgy. Then add it in for the second verse. Also I have always loved really tight and present "beach boy type" harmony. I would throw a bit more tuning on them and bring them up in the mix a bit. Maybe even pan the harmonies harder left and right. Loving the way you mixed the instrumentals in this! And it's a truly good song from a music stand point! Keep up the great work!!!
