For playing live is it a good idea add a compressor to the main inserts to give an overall tighter or stronger(punchy) sound?
I have some compressors on various individual channel... :cool:

Yes, but in moderation. If you're not carful, you could easily end up with a mix that is less tight and punchy.

You'll have to play with the attack and release times. Generally use lower ratios, 1:1.1 to 1:4 at the most (depending on the sound of your particular compressor). Be careful not to boost it too much or you'll have feedback for days.

Results will also depend heavily on how the mix sounds before it hits the compressor. This starts from the tip of the drumstick/guitar pick/vocal cords/etc. and everything in between. YMMV to an extreme degree.
