I've got a Pro Tools Mix Plus version 5.0, 888/24, USD, and a Tascam DA-88 with the SY-88 sync card. I need to make dubs/stem mixes on DA-88. What is the preferred method of doing this?

What I ended up doing was slaving Pro Tools via LTC out of the DA-88 into the USD. I have to layback analog because I can't afford the $500.00 Tascam AES/EBU-TDIF converter, but I did layback AES/EBU to the Digibeta master.

I was first trying to slave the DA-88 to Pro Tools but with several different types of setups illustrated in the DA-88 manual, I found it confusing. Word Clock, SMPTE, MTC, which method or combination of methods should I use for which circumstances?

Can I play a session in Pro Tools and have that TC drive another device i.e. the Tascam DA-88? If so, how?

Thanks!

Hi Boom Chic,

The best way would be to use a masterclock and slave PT, USD and the DA88 to wordclock, with the DA88 as time-code (SMPTE) master and transfer digitally.

If you are transferring in analog the best setup would be to use a masterclock with a built in Black & Burst, the Nanosyncs for example. Here's how you would do it:

Connect the word clock outs to your converters (x256 or standard depending on your converters) and feed superclock (x256) to the USD. Take a "video ref" (black & Burst) out of the Nanosyncs and into the DA88. Make sure the DA88 is switched to reference from Video Ref. Take time-code out of your DA88 and into the USD. In this scenario the Nanosyncs is both the masterclock and the house reference while the DA88 is the time-code master. This is definitely the preferred method for transferring in analog but of course this isn't as good as the above method, staying digital all the way.

Thanks Greg,

Looks like that would be a good method, unfortunately, I don't have "black burst" or nanosynch, or house synch, etc.

I am only going between PT and DA-88, either slaving PT, or the DA-88 to the other.

MMC, MTC, Word Clock, SMPTE (LTC) are my available refs., either from the DA-88 to PT via USD, or PT/USD to DA-88.

I only have a video ref when I lay back to Digibeta, then I use the "Super 3" video out and the LTC from the Digibeta deck to slave Pro Tools via the USD. DA-88 laybacks are done later, just with Pro Tools.

Thanks again for your help :)
