I'm new here. I teach an audio course at Calvin College. We're just installing a new facility and are trying to make decisions about what to install. Our biggest problem is that we will have 10 audio work stations that students use, but they can't always use the same one, so we're interested in a solution that would have them record directly to a server so they could continue working on their projects on any workstation. Is anyone doing that and could offer advice about servers, hardware or software to accomplish this? Thanks.

Hi Bob, for recording over Network, you will need a really fast one...supposing CD-Quality @44.1/16bit thinking about multitrack-editing over network, you propably need a throughput of about 4 MB/sec for 16 tracks. Better let your Students backup their projects to the server and gather their backedup sessions from the server. This is a lesson, they need to learn anyways;-)
Just tell them, they have to be really conscious about what they are doing, and to be aware, that everything NOT backed up will be definitely deleted - gone forever into the Digital Nirvana...
Saves you bucks on the system and is more of a realwold-situation for your students to work in.
