This is a subject that has been talked about already (maybe), but I'd like to know where I can find some knowledgeable infos (web sites, books...apart from this site :D ) about these two different design ethics, so that I'll be more conscious when I'd shop for a new preamp (or mic).

While there's certainly nothing wrong with knowing as much as you can about ANY subject... it STILL should come down to how each individual choice of mic pre SOUNDS to you rather than its front-end design.
having said that i, 99.9% of the time) prefer the sound of GOOD transformer mic pres... but that's not to say that every mic pre with a transformer sounds good by any means.
the specs only take you so far and then you have to listen.

My question was purely out of curiosity; I agree that one should listen before buying any piece of gear, but I also think that knowing ahead what to look for is a time saver and can prevent from having bad surprises; I definitely like to know what I'm shopping for, and I want to know how the gear I use works, so that I can get the best I can out of it.
Having said that tahnx again for your feedback, any more specific links or books I can check out ?

Transformerless designs tend to have less distortion and more ba
Transformerless designs tend to have less distortion and more bandwidth. In general they are more transparent. Transformers generally give some cool colorations (ie Neve, API etc.) And there's also some transparent transformer designs such as Avalon 2022 and John Hardy Pres that aren't quite as wimpy as the transformerless pres but not quite as transparent as say a Grace Design 201.
