Hi all,
I am looking for an advice for the following setup:
I've got a Tascam DM-4800 with a Firewire card + couple of ADATs cards, a G5 running Logic Audio with a MOTU 2408, an Lynx Aurora 16 AD/DA and a couple of mic preamps. I am looking for the best possible way to connect all these equipment together in order to record bands, setup monitor mixes and record overdubs in the studio.
The mic preamps should be connected to the converter. Do I then connect the converter to the Tascam ADATs, then from Tascam via Firewire to Logic for recording? Or should I go straight to the MOTU ADATs and then to the mixer for monitoring?
I think both ways have some positives & negatives issues, but I would really like to have your opinion here.

It depends on latency. Ideally, you want to keep the Tascam out of the input chain when laying down tracks. So the best route would be from the pres to the Lynx ADC then into the computer via the ADATs on the Motu. Then use the Tascam for generating your monitor mix from the Lynx outs during tracking, assuming that the latency is acceptable.
What you don't want to happen, especially with bands who are not expecting it, is for the monitor tracks to get progressively later as you add more of them to the replay mix. If that is likely to be a problem, you may have to fall back on the other route of taking the Lynx ADAT outs into the Tascam and then to the computer, either still via ADATs or via FireWire. However, this can generate the problem that the tracks being recorded have no latency, but the replayed ones do. Try it and see what works best.
