Alesis ADAT HD24 FTP and Write Protection Override
been a long time! I'm currently working a gig as a second sound engineer on a cruise ship. With this setup in the theatre we use an Alesis ADAT HD24 to run production shows, as well as to record 'sick' tracks for singers, or if an act wants we can route from the (dated) Yamaha DM2000 console to the HD24.
Questions 1). One of our drives cannot record the "sick" tracks because it is in 'write protect' mode, unfortunately the manual and subsequent googling has resulted in no ways to turn on this feature...is it something that's physically on the drive itself? OR can it be taken off with the HD24 in some alternate submenu?
2) Has anyone been able to make the FTP ethernet transfer feature function correctly using windows 7? The manual is from 2001 and therefore all the help is no good.
I've also heard about the Fireport, is that a good alternative to the FTP function through ethernet?
Thanks in advance!

I had my HD24 and Windows XP working several years ago. Got the Alesis Fireport and haven't bothered with using FTP again. Just too slow for my needs. Bone up and get the Aleisis Fireport. Worth the money. Much quicker transfers, easier to do transfers and 99.9% reliable hastle free transfers.
I don't have mine right in front of me, but I think there's an option to lock/unlock recording when you scroll through the song parameters, like if you want to edit the name. It locks/unlocks on a per-song basis, so it's not the whole disk.
The ethernet option sucks. It's brutally slow compared to anything you're used to. Get the FirePort. There's also compatible hardware for interfacing the drives to a computer, and there's something called [[url=http://[/URL]="http://ringbreak.dnd.utwente.nl/~mrjb/hd24tools/index.html"]HD24Tools[/]="http://ringbreak.dnd.utwente.nl/~mrjb/hd24tools/index.html"]HD24Tools[/] which can export parts of track files in addition to the whole files if you want to go with a third party solution.
Sign Up on the Yahoo HD 24 User Group. Or you can search HD 24 tools. This is a wonderful piece of shareware software. It allows you to utilize your FST formatted hard drives without having to purchase anything. You can plug it right into your PC secondary drive position and run the software. Quite nice and offers features that the FST 100 series doesn't offer.

An HD24 song can be write-protected, as shown by a padlock icon in the display. You can un-write protect it by moving the cursor to the padlock icon and pressing the up-arrow key.
Ethernet transfer is really only for use when everything else is not possible. It's prohibitively slow for almost any purpose. The only time I had to use it, it took about real-time per track, so a 1-hour 24-track recording took over a day of actual transfer time.
Get a FirePort to use with a FireWire interface on your computer. The Alesis software is called FST/Connect, and only works with the FirePort oor the identical Vipower Smartdock. If you use the 3rd-party HD24Tools software for transfer instead, you are not limited to FireWire, and can opt for a Vipower external caddy system (Mobile Rack) with a USB interface.
