Hello everyone,
Basically, I have asked a rather talented chap on youtube to compose a recording on his piano of some draft work done in FL but he doesn't know how much to charge and neither do I know what I should expect to pay. He hasn't started the work yet. My track lasts for nearly 4 mins, but I requested him to make a demo first which could be around 30 seconds. This is to save me money incase it's not the style I'm looking for and also to save him his time. His composition will literally be him playing his version of my track on piano with a few alterations to melody and improved transitions. No compression, no effects, just raw sound.
Any ideas?
P.S. I appreciate everyone has their own interpretation when it comes to reproducing music, but how would I go on if his demo doesn't fit my requirements? I'm aware I still have to pay him, but am I entitled to ask him to redo it/ edit it?

Hi there Jeff,
Well, as far as I'm aware, he's not a professional studio musician, he writes his own songs and composes them on piano/ keyboard, without the use of studio equipment or specialist software. I've heard his work and I'm fairly confident his style of play fits my project. At the moment, the quality isn't really a problem, I'm more after an arrangement, done by someone who can play piano and play it well. I don't think he's particularly doing it for the money, but because he's willing to help and has a great passion for music. But, obviously, I can't expect him to give up his time and it's only fair he is paid a good price.
However, in the past, whenever I've thought about having my work recreated, I've always been worried about the theme being obliterated from my low quality tracks. But, I suppose that's the chance I have to be willing to take, or either that, the song will most likely always remain in its original raw state. It's a bit of a gamble I find as I can't afford to waste money on something that may not be of use.
In my area (Seattle) professional studio musicians charge between $50 to $125 U.S. per song to lay down tracks in the studio.
Sorry, I dont understand, are these unmastered tracks? Is this price just simply to lay them down as an arrangement to be mastered?

This includes, within reason, numerous takes at the discretion of the producer.
In these cases, however, we almost always know the style and capability of the musician ahead of engaging same. In your situation I think you are deserving of some samples of the musician's work up front with no charge so you can evaluate whether or not he is right for your project.
