B&K 4007 - any use for classical recording

Hi,
I stumbled over a pair of B&K 4007, what later became DPA 4007 if understand it right. They were at a very nice price and I had to make a quick decision. On second thought, are they of any use for classical recording?

Noisy???? WOW.... I can tell you that mine are TOTALLY silent! I can plug them into my Buzz Audio pre and crank it all the way up, and I can hear nothing but ambient sounds.... no hiss, no hum.

They are perfect for classical recordings, but only in a good sounding room...... One thing I've found with them..... man, they'll tell you if your room is below par ;)

I can't imagine why not......they're similar to the 4006, are they not? (quick google search shows they may have a higher SPL rating, and a slightly different body size, but they look similar in all the important ways to the 4006's...)

What kind of price did you find for them?

Indeed they should work pretty good for classical recordings. They are reference measurement microphones and the specs say that they have a noise level above other DPA mics (4006, 4011) and have a low sensitivity, but they are made to be totally transparent, so that might make up for the noise level (which by the way is less than most earthworks mics): http://www.dpamicrophones.com/module.php?MID=101&itemid=4007&function=pspecification
Nice response up to 40 kHz and a great off axis response.

Check out their miniature mics 4060, 4061 and 4071 as well, they are really nice for the price and almost invisible on stage. Almost no off axis coloration at all due to a really small diaphragm.

I´ve checked up a bit on them. Seems to a bit on the noisy side, but with very high max SPL. Probably not for the harpsichord, more for the timpany if I guess right. According to specs they come in about the same as the Earthworks mics and they seem to be used by classical recorders as well. Anyway, I will try and see. Nothing in the plans right now though, have some other things to test first. I´m positiveliy loaded with new mics at the moment, two MKH20-s and one MKH30 as well. Considering a MKH40 as well.

I paid the equivalent of $1.050 for the pair but they were part of a larger deal. The are a bit tarnished and scratched and are made in 1983. Guess I could that back if I decided to sell them, so I am not very worried.

not to contradict you, but I definitely hear a difference. I compare the 4007 to a MKH20 and there is quite a bit of difference in noise level, even in my not very quite home. On second thought though, a largish part of that may come from the preamp, the 4007-s intentionally has a very low sensitivity. I simply have to try them with a better preamp.
