Sorry to flog this dead horse again, but I was all set to buy the Apogee Ensemble. Then I read about coloration (CSI). What? Really? Is that just output or right in the track? Weird. I had one spoken for in an order, now I feel afraid.

So somebody mentioned the Lavry Blue?

I'm using in for a simple system u87- BrentAverill - converter -Logic Pro(mac) - Genelec 1030As. Two channels in and out. That's it. I record vocals, singing and dialogue (well, monologue), and acoustic instrument, esp. guitar. I eventually want to add a set of DPAs and a grace pre, but for now, I really need a just converter.

So balanced, clear, accurate, uncoloured. Possible for $2000? Suggestions?

What did you read and where did you read it? Only a fool believes everything they read. I have not heard the Apogee Ensemble but as far as the A2D conversion, I would expect that any colorolation it may have would be so minor that most people would not be able to hear it or notice.

There is always some coloration or distortion in every device that processes audio. If you have worries like this that are IMO unjustified, then put up your money and buy a converter that has the least amount of coloration. But in order to find such a product, you will need to obtain them, test them and then come to your own conclusions. Like most things in pro audio at the higher end level, the audio/sound differences are often minor and purely subjective from one person to another. If you really want peace of mind, then search and read what others say is the best or the least colored and then buy that. But that dosen't mean you will still get what you were after or that you will be satisfied.

In my experience most fools don't read at all.

Here's where I found some negative opinions about the ensemble:
Apogee Ensemble Converters compared to Rosetta 800
Converters I/O
Knowledge Forum Index » Pro Audio Gear

If the coloration issue is as serious as CSI reports, it's not something one would consider "minor".

Anyway, I think one of the purposes of this forum is to ask people who use high-end gear their opinions so as to make an informed buying decisions.

This is a relatively new product, So if anyone else besides CSI has used the Apogee Ensemble and has an opinion, I'd be happy to hear it. As far as the literature from the manufacturer, it sounds great.

In my experience most fools don't read at all.

In my experience, that is about all fools and lazy people do. Just spend more time and effort reading than doing any real audio engineering. Always looking for the shortcut or the easy way.

CSI had some interesting comments. To get real meaning from those comments, one would have to know much more about CSI and all exact details of his test/comparision. Many well intended people make comments about products from their testing or comparing products but lack the understading or the correct testing methodology to make fair, balanced and meaningful comments. You might try searching other pro audio forums for other comments as well.

It may be that since it is a new product, it will need to mature with driver or firmware updates before it's real value is obtained.

If you are really are interested in that product, you can always buy one from from a dealer with a reasonable return policy and come to our own conclusions.
