For a week now I've been getting this almost bit distortion (I guess you can say) on my voice recordings. Here's a sample of what I did today and it just sounds awful. It's already on -10db, I even did what the troubleshooting says by lowering the preamp, turning off phantom and then turning it all back on but nothing. And it's not that it's too loud because if I lower the volume or whatever it's still there.

It almost seems like it's because it's too loud but no matter how much I play with the levels it's there. I've had the mic since March of this year.

Do you hear it live or only on recordings ?

The best way is to go with illimination. Try another mic or an other source (even new mics can be defective), try other cable(s)
You don't say which preamp and/ or audio interface you're using. Is the whole spectrum distorted or just a small frequency range?
Do you hear something odd when recording silence?

I hear it live as well. I didn't think of a problem with the cable, it could be that since that is actually a few years old. I can try that. I'm using Line6 as my interface. I don't hear anything when it's silent, rarely I'll hear that distortion when it's quiet.

Here's a different link for the file cuz it might not work on some browsers. [="http://www.mediafir…"]BadVocals[/]="http://www.mediafir…"]BadVocals[/]

Line6 products are mostly amp simulators. If you have a model with mic preamp like : [="http://recording.or…"]POD Studio UX1[/]="http://recording.or…"]POD Studio UX1[/]
You may want to see if changing the mic preamp simulation and see if it makes a difference.. Some of those simulation might add distortions even if the output does'nt seems to peak.
