I'm considering a pair of Earthworks omni's for a variety of applications, such as drum overheads, rooms, upright bass, acoustic guitar, etc. The only thing that concerns me is their high self noise, especially with the TC30ks, which is what i would prefer since they're half the price of the QTC1s. I don't really have a reference point for this, and am wondering if anyone has had situations where a TC30k wouldn't work due to self noise, i.e. how much does it hamper their versatility? Is it really worth an extra grand for the QTC1s to drop 5 db's from the TC30ks 27dbs of noise?

I do not have any problem with the QTC1 self noise. Many times the room noise, the tape, the desk add much more noise than the mic.
The QTC are nice, better than the TC30, and got me some lovely noises to tape. The mony is always a quetion and a consideration. The extra grand is a lot if you do not have it, its OK if you need the mics badly. I would say any Earthworks mic will have a hard time being a main mic in a studio. Its a nice addition though.

It depends on how loud and/or featured you plan on making those tracks. On drum overheads it's no problem mon. (Unless your drummer is a pansy. I mean, um... utilizes subtlety and finesse with the dynamics of quiet passages.) On acoustic guitar, ok as long as it's mixed in with a bunch of other stuff. Solo nylon guiter... ehhh, maybe not the best choice. Live classical recordings for Sony music - don't think so buddy.
When used with good judgement, can create some fantastic spatial imaging.
