I reread my last post and realized that I am an idiot. So I deleted it.
I'm looking at buying an interface and preamp. I can go up to $1000. I only really need four channels. However, I need equipment capable of giving me reasonably high quality sound. I'm running a PC based setup with Nuendo as my primary editing software. A lot of people on this board use external mixers, but in every studio project i've ever done the mixing was done using the computer and a control surface. What's up with that?
Is the M-Audio Delta1010 decent? What about the Mackie Onyx 400F? It comes with 4 Onyx preamps onboard... but for $600 it can't be all that it claims... can it?
I already have a great condenser mic and an SM57
Equipment recomendations and anti-recomendations would be incredibly helpful.

You have a budget and know what you need. You either need a sound card and pre amps to go with it or a combination unit like the onyx. Either way will work. You can get the same results from either set up. Pick the one you are more comfortable working with that works the way you want it to. Under 1k there won't be a huge difference in the sound.
I would head to the nearest shop and have them show you how to work with each setup and see which you like better.

i've got one of the onyx 1640 mixers and the firewire card. for the price they are excellent and NOTICABLY cleaner than a lot of similar-priced alternatives.
find a retailer that will give you a return policy and try it out. if you dont like it, try something else.

I use them along side my MUCH more expensive pres (Grace 201/801 and Millennia HV3D-8) and never think twice about it. The conversion is damn nice too!
I don't see how anything in the Mackie Onyx line is a wrong move - go for it!

I've had a Mackie 400F for a couple of weeks now and I'm very happy with it. It has the right amount of ins and outs for me, 2 headphone jacks (no need for a headphone amp for me) and has stable drivers and control panel once you update the firmware.
The mic pres sound really good. I honestly don't have much to compare to, as before I was using a Behringer Eurorack and an Audiophile 24/96 that never got it's ASIO issues sorted out, picked up noise from the inside of my pc, and never once worked at 96k or 24bit depth. Enough about that thing.
I can't say anything bad about the Onyx 400F. And you can take it with you with or withOUT a pc!
