Expander/Direct Out/Wha?

I have a Behringer MX9000. I have an Alesis HD24. What is the best/easiest method of using all 24 tracks of the HD24? I have 16 tracks through the 8-bus and internal patching of the MX9000. Should I go Direct Out, Mix-B (which I am totally not understanding fully when it comes to the recording/playback routing side of things), or just use the Expander port and add a little mixer? Or what? WHAT?

Okay, with this method, I'm pre-everything, including aux? So, I'm just sending raw signals from the inputs, channel-to-track (as in, channel 1 input goes to track 1 on HD24), so this is similar to Directo Outs except Everything is pre? I can see how this would be great for capturing live. In the studio, what is the biggest advantage of this method? Sorry if I sound ignorant, I've always done things the easiest way, not necessarily the best, and I'm new with the HD24.

I would use the 24 channel inserts of the MX9000 as outputs. In this way your recording tracks are pre-eq, pre-mute and pre-fader. You will need to make or buy the special cable looms with TRS jacks that have the ring shorted to the tip at one end in order not to break the signal chain into the mixer proper. The other ends have mono (unbalanced) jacks which the HD24 is quite happy with.

I spent a happy afternoon wiring up the special looms for my HD24s, and I can now record off most of the analog desks I find in venues without affecting the live sound.

You can also accomplish this with an insert cable, just be sure to push it in one "click" (NOT all the way in) so you get the send ring but not the returns.
