Yikes! I finally set up a few accounts on FB, mostly to connect my painting business and the other, to setup a global way new members can sign up to RO using their FB account. One easy signup.

After getting RO done, hold crap! I was attacked by about 1000 people from countries I have no idea where they are. Names I could never even pronounce lol. I started Friending everyone and soon realized that wasn't too bright.

Anyway, I'm just venting from the shell shock of that place. I need to be careful who I friend lol.

What a big time waster. But cool too. I see why people get hooked on it.It really cool hooking up with old friends and seeing how it all connects everyone.

Its there a place for RO there? I seems like it would kill us as a community.

We won't get inundated here, my FB profile is what I'm am in shock over. I posted pics of my studio and within a few days there were over a 1000 people wanting to Friend me. Some serious high profile people which is cool. BUT! A long with that came some pretty young girls and I started thinking, oh oh! Something isn't right here lol!:cautious:

I've figured out how to unfriend 900 of them now. All is good but holy crap! What a zoo.

A day after I connected RO to Facebook, we started getting spam and unrelated, unqualified members signing up here, who have no clue about microphones and how to record music with musicians in front of them.
We are true blue here and I plan on keeping it like that, so I'm going to make it a policy to screen new members who don't include a gear profile that gels with our industry key wording.

audiokid Thu, 12/10/2015 - 10:52

I'm using the gear profile to screen everyone now. As an example, the beauty of experience, we can tell a poser when they say they use Sonar and Apple together lol ;) Or put serious gear use into the slot with no mention of conversion or mics. Some things you just know are total BS, hearsay etc.

But the best way to screen real people or not, everyone puts something about recording into the gear profile slot. An obvious bot or unwanted person usually puts "hgkhdjsd" or unrelated info into the gear slot.

That's what happens when you invite everyone to your party, LOL, you're bound to get a few people showing up who you really don't want to show up. ;)

I'm not implying that we are "elitists" here, but this forum has always been designed to speak to that select group of people who are still using actual microphones to record sound sources with.

For the record, that ideology and method is what originally brought me here. It wasn't that there are both analog and digital production guys here, it wasn't because I was looking for a place to shamelessly plug my own material.
I came here because the membership is made up of people who do what I do, who like to record the way I like to record. The gear can be 40 years old or 3 days new... that doesn't matter to me.

What matters is that at some point, everyone here is going to eventually plug a mic into a pre and record tracks in that method. I don't care if it goes to tape or to a hard drive, or if it's digital or analog.
What I do care about is how the sound is getting to its ultimate destination, and for me, that interest and method is founded in microphones.

And, I don't consider a forum that caters to this type of recording to be elitist in scope, either. Purist maybe, but elitist? No.
There's nothing "elitist" about using a mic to capture and record sound, we've been doing it this way for over 100 years now, and this method has been known to occasionally produce some very fine results from time to time ... :p LOLOL.

We have a right to dictate membership terms here on RO; to accept those whom we feel would be of benefit to the forum, and to deny membership to those whom we feel wouldn't.
We aren't federally, or state/provincially funded, it's private and paid for entirely by Chris. He owns the site, he runs the show, and he has the right to accept or deny membership to anyone he wants.
There's no law that says that he has to invite everyone into his house. ;)

To be clear, I'm not even against using samples as a way to accent a composition or mix. Very few of us have the space or the money to have a real Grand Piano or Hammond B3 in our studios, so I do frequently use VSTi's myself... ( although I'm also actually playing those parts and not relying on pre-recorded loops or tracks)... But .... I also always have a hot mic ready and nearby, in order to record vocals and/or acoustic instruments that integrate with those artificial instruments/samples.

If someone is working with and using strictly VSTi's and Synths to produce their art, then that's their thing, and there's nothing wrong with that... that's fine... but they don't belong here. And that's a mutual benefit thing, too.
They won't be happy here because they won't get anything out of this site, and we won't be happy continually trying to explain that to them. ;)

Besides, there are hundreds of other sites out there that cater to the "sample/VSTi only" crowd, that they can frequent or join, and that would invite and support their creative methods.

IMHO of course.

And as of 2 days ago I thought polarity had to do with the earths' magnetic field until I read that other post from our new member from the east....

Silly me...;)

Oh but it does. You can only successfully flip the phase on a track/channel if you are within a one day time frame before or after the Winter Solstice. I'm surprised you didn't already know this. It's common knowledge on the internet.

I think it was determined as a rule by the same guy who claimed that the "solo" switch on a channel is there to automatically bring up the volume of a solo in a mix ... guitar, bass, etc. :p

Ahhh, but Grasshopper...you forget I'm from the Land Down Under....
-Its the Summer Solstice where I am at present...;)

DonnyThompson Fri, 12/11/2015 - 10:11

Yes, but the rule was based on the Solstice in this hemisphere, Skippy ... go ahead... try it... you'll see, it won't work. It's like trying to stand an egg on its end, and....

LOL

Couldn't keep a straight face. I tried. I really did...

...as thousands of newbies all over the internet are now saying to themselves, "Damn! So that's why I couldn't get my M-S array to work!" LOL

I've actually played with worse.... LOL

Of course, what they're probably not showing in that vid, are the outtakes where Skippy gets freaked out by all the people and the lights, and decides to do a full frontal attack on the director, hissing and punching and clawing his eyes out while kicking his nads into next week, and then trying to mate with the female producer of the show just afterwards... LOL

I've never seen that show. We did have "Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp", though. A real monkey doing a spoof of Get Smart:

Sean G Fri, 12/11/2015 - 18:14

I grew up on Skippy, Lancelot Link Secret Chimp & The Thunderbirds....

I love the irony of the chimp named Darwin...

Ali Assa Seen...no stereotyping there, eh?

- Those were the days...good TV & definitely no exploitation of animals ;)

- Thanks Donny, now I'm going to spend my afternoon watching Lancelot Link on YT :D
