hello all!

I'm on a tight budget, and I'm just starting out.

i have a Yamaha mg 16 fx analog mixing console. I'm new to the whole DAW scene and i was just wonderin how i could hook it up to my computer.
the catch is that, i have no sound module, just a basic built-in PC soundcard.
i intend on using Logic Platinum or Audition as my software.

the question is what are the connectin patches i have to do (and what connectors) from my mixer to the CPU so that it integrates with my software?

thanks in advance! : )

you need an interface. if you have a firewire port you need a firewire interface. if only usb then a usb interface. the next question is how many separate channels do you need at once. most can be daisychained together so you can add more as needed. (2 8-channel firepods would let you record 16 tracks at once).

the other thing is that most of these interfaces have a couple or more mic pre-amps in them (so they can be all you need with mics and a computer).

this is ok to use with a mixer but one of the few interface only products i've seen is the 12 version on this page. proof

the pres in many of these products may be better than the ones in that mixer but im not familiar with the board. or these interfaces. i've just been looking into which way to go myself.

i don't know if you have no 12 mics to record or if you can get that many separate outs from the board but there you go.

i assume you realize the board will not control anything in the computer (software) and will just supply the sounds to record. if you want to use a board to mix etc. then you need a controller.

so google "firewire interface"- theres a ton of them out there.

unless you just want to use the soundcard. then go 2 mono 1/4" to stereo miniplug. (2 guitar cables and an adapter) from the main steo outs of the board into the input plug in the computer.

>>i intend on using Logic Platinum<<

You must have a crack of that program else, it makes no sense that you wouldn't have upgraded to the Mac version by now!

Be that as it may, it makes even LESS sense to use LAP with your built-in soundcard. So, the VERY first thing you have to do is upgrade your sound card to something at least like the M-AUDIO line of cheaper cards.

After that, you would simply plug the output of your mixer to the input of your card. You'd have to use a direct out for recording (like an AUX bus or some other BUS) and then, use the monitor out for monitoring through whatever stereo system you have at home. I am not familiar with that mixer so, I don't know the routing options on it. But, basically you'd have to have at least two audio routes: one that goes into the PC for recording and one for monitoring your live intruments as well as the returns from your PC.

yea im still using the Logic Platinum 5.5 since the newer versions have crossed over to Mac. However, i'm now more based on Audition than Logic.

im thinkin of gettin the E-mu 1212m sound card so as to work with my mixer. Any advice?
