My next adventure will involve living out of a suitcase for a number of years. I plan to build a 'knapsack studio' for my travels. So far I'll have my Mbox, reason, cans and a macbook.
If you had to build a knapsack studio what kind of things would you have in it? Monitors, controllers, outboard gear, roll out keyboard, etc etc...
Remember all you have is a knapsack the size of the average carry-on bag.

A zeppelin. If you're doing outdoor recording. I need to buy or make me one of these! I could have used them several times.

M-audio MidAir controller. It's a wireless keyboard controller. Neato! Or maybe a trigger finger. I don't like them roll-up keyboards.

I use a coffee shop's mackie mixer for my mics, soon to be upgrading from a lexicon alpha to a presonus firestudio. All of my mics, all of my cables, and a general dbx eq, all running to a laptop. it gets the job done!

For my composition station, I have the M-audio backpack, it has room for my MOTU 828, O2 keyboard, firewire drives and Powerbook( soon to be a Macbook) and headphones( I don't attempt mixes on the road).
I'm using Logic 8, so it's cpu effecient.

I'd take a 8 microphone input device such as the Presonus or similar devices. I'd pack a pair of SM58's and a half dozen Sony ECM 66's or Sennheiser MKE2 lavalier miniature condenser microphones in both Omni and Uni. Capsules so small that they can handle very high SPL with a beautifully smooth flat and linear response. It's amazing what you can use for microphones stands when using miniature high-quality lavalier condenser microphones. I even have one made by Crown which is a PZM lavalier! Stick it on a drummer's shirt and you won't believe it! You can get really creative with subminiature microphones. You can tape them on to just about anything. I recorded a Verdi Requiem for NBC television using lots of those. You couldn't see them anywhere. It got me an EMMY nomination. They're not cheap but neither is the sound they produce.
