I am going away to college and I was hoping to purchase an audio interface to bring with me. I need this interface for recording guitar demos. Nothing major, I'm looking for something somewhat portable. I don't really know what to look for. I am running Sonar 6 on Windows Vista and I was hoping to spend around $600. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Jeremy's post is probably more responsive than this, but have you thought about getting a stereo flash recorder? If you are going to be recording in music department practice rooms it will be easy to carry along. .wav file drap and drop via USB. They are will within your budget. The preamps and converters are nothing to write home about - but nothing in that budget range is. I know it's not specifically what you asked for, and it may not fit your situation. But it seems to me a really good fit for a lot of musically inclined college students.
As far as a specific recommendation, I got an Edirol R-09 recently, and my wife and daughter have been using it constantly to record music lessons, practice sessions, etc. I have a Rode stereo mic that improves the sound, but the internal mics are good enough for the applications we have been using it for. And you can beat the convenience. However, I have not compared the Edirol head to head with other models, and prices seem to be dropping and features expanding with these devices. I think selecting a model may be a game time decision with these recorders for the next year or so.

This is going to sound a bit silly, but I'm not exactly sure what an audio interface does. :oops: I thought that it would take the place of my amplifier which i would normally mic for recording. If I did line my guitar in to the interface would i be able to get distortion or digital effects for recording. again any help would be much appreciated. thanks

If you said no to the first, but yes to the second I would say a presonus firebox.
If you said yes to both a presonus firepod.
If you said yes to the first, and no to the second, buy a firewire card.
If you are doing just guitar work get the firebox
Buy from ebay, and get the at2020 package its really the best deal.
