Something I'm just curious about.
At my school we have large mixing consoles with Pro Tools HD rigs.
When you're interfacing a large analog console to a computer. Whats the best route? All Ive ever seem are those big Pro Tools racks. Is there any other option especially since Pro Tools is now compatible with any interface?
Also, is there an interface that converts more than 8 signals at a time?
Just curious cause I like working with an analog console but I'm inexperienced at DA converter and interface combos.

I've used Alesis HD24XRs for this purpose - 24 channels at a time. The bottleneck comes in getting reliable computer interfacing, whether it be the ADAT needed for the HD24s or something else. Using HD24s takes the pressure off the interface, as you can be recording to disk in the HD24 at the same time as trying to get reliable data to the computer.
This is A-D conversion we are mainly talking about rather than D-A, which comes in when you contemplate mixdown using the external desk.

Some people use Lynx converters. These are PCIe based and can do 16 channels at a time. Slap two of these in you computer and you've got a 32 channel analog board from the direct out. RME has converters in sets of 8 as well. These can be converted to AES, ADAT, or MADI.
