Hi everyone. I'm hoping to get some good advice in upgrading my home recording gear to accomplish better quality results. Let me describe what I've been doing and then please advise me with some good opinions on my best next step. I'm a fingerstyle guitarist doing all instrumental tracks. Main guitar is a Taylor 714ce, I've been recording into a Tascam DP01FX lately with fair results. I'm Micing using 2 Oktava MK012's on the 12th fret, a large condensor mic placed a few feet back to capture some room sound and also the direct output of the Taylor's expression system. I'm sending the signals to a pair of PreSonus Blue Tube DP preamps and then submixing the outputs down to stereo and out to the Tascam. I'd like to have the ability to record these four tracks simultaneously into a DAW (firewire correct?), I also occasionally add a bit of guitar synth for some added effect now and then but rarely.

I've dabbled in computer recording, using Cakewalk Guitar Tracks and Home studio but my old computer just isn't up to the task and so I'm seriously considering making the leap to a better computer system and interface and software (Ive been considering the PreSonus Studio One, Cuebase, or Logic Express for Mac). I'm torn between getting a Mac.. maybe a mini with 4gb of ram, or going to a PC system. I've looked into a PC system with about 4-6gb of ram running vista or windows 7, I understand that XP is great but have also heard that support for XP is ending. I've heard that the PResonus firebox is quite a good interface for either mac or PC (opinions or suggestions?).

I've done a bit of research and remain a bit confused, wanting of course to get a good system and not plunk down good money and get the stuff home and find I've made an expensive mistake. So if some of you more experienced folks could provide some good opinions and suggestions, I'd really appreciate the help.

Thanks a lot for your time and help!

Hey, my main guitar is a Taylor 414ce. Nice!

I may add that having multiple microphones at one source can add phase distortion.

I usually only use one mic on my acoustic, but sometimes you can get good results from switching phase on one of the mics in a multi mic setup. It all depends on how you see it I guess.

Anyway, I use a presonus firestudio with my macbook, I have had mixed results. I would say the firestudio is good, however if your going with mac I would suggest you look into the apogee duet. From what I understand the duet is the same as the ensemble, only 2 inputs instead of 8.
