I was running IE5 on my desktop and upgraded to IE6 SP1 to make some accounting software happy. Well, now I have NOTHING. Explorer loads, but only gives me the "web site unavailable" crappola. Outlook, which also upgraded, will not make contact witht he server. All the settings are the same in both, but neither will allow me to go online. I can GET online, but can't GO anywhere.
Of note, I used tucows.com to download the whole 77MB upgrade at work, burned it to CD, and installed it from there; as MS only downloads an installer. I didn't want to use a phone line to DL 77MB.

Any ideas?

Hmmm...most interesting! I would do a couple of things here..

one, make sure that the internet connections settings for Internet Exploder are indeed set to the correct LAN or dial up account. Sometimes updating the software can reset those settings.

That may be why Outlook isn't working as well.

Also empty out your temporary internet files as well as your history.

I have a feeling it's the internet settings in IE6

This may be a long shot (something similar happened to me once). Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your modem - particularly if you are using a broadband modem and even more particularly if it is a USB device. Be sure to write down your settings though (inlcuding your ISP account name and number, phone number etc etc) as you will probably lose them.

As I said, something similar happened to me once and this is how it was resolved. Otherwise, be prepared to call your ISP.

I don't suppose you set a restore point before the upgrade did you?

Open a CMD window.
Can you PING an address or URL?

PING 168.150.240.1
This is my gateway router and visible from the outside.

If you cannot PING, you have basic connectivity issues. Do an IPCONFIG /ALL (w2k, xp), or WinIpCfg from Win9x.

Check all settings, and make sure you have a Gateway and at least one DNS address. Ping both.
