Hey everyone, I'm interested in picking up an aurotone mix cube or pair, just for the sake of trying them, while I'm in between permanent locations. I'm planning a pair os yammy hs5's for general monitoring. seems to me a single mix cube would be enough, especially since i like to hit the mono button fairly often, and am curious about a single speaker in that case, since a pair of speakers in mono exhibit some acoustic coupling. not that its a huge consideration on such a small, and bandwidth limited speaker like the aurotone. Anyway, just wondering about anyone's thoughts. Thanks.

the standard for many years and for good reason was to have a pair of Auratones, NS10's and then some big ass speakers that did bass and loud .... neither the Auratones or NS10's are particularly good sounding speakers but if you can get a mix to sound good on them, it will most likely sound good on anything else. i love them.

So you see where im going? the hs-5's (poor mans ns's 10), the aurotones, then the bigs. im addicted to full size speakers. Ive found 8" 'studio monitors' to generally be the most difficult to mix on as far as having things translate.
im gonna start with one passive avantone, and if im finding it useful, and the need arises, ill grab another to make a pair. Im thinking the passive could be a little more versatile, and ive found that my best mixes seem to have been done on passive speakers, of all sizes. any thoughts on active/passive, on these, or in general?

I'd get active speakers for close range (near field) monitoring. They are more versatile and nice and simple with a good quality monitor controller too.
Passive are nice if you have a really good power-amp and are going that way with full range. You can also put things between the power amp and the speaker with Active like EQ or room acoustic tools.

thats pretty much what i had in mind, at least to begin with. once i get into multi-channel, and full range, passive is most practical.
i was also referring specifically to active vs passive avantones. they have both, im leaning towards passive still, so i dont have to be tethered to a/c, or a battery pack.
the QSC amps ive specd out have all the crossovers, delays, and eq built right in, which i think is nice and neat. eventually after this prototype rig is built, ill be getting into amps ect. i want a nice set of amps for the Mains/Subs.

Are you guys using the avantone, or the auratone incarnation? it seems there's some differences in driver size, and $40 in asking price. i've decided on passive either way, since the psu is clunky looking, it became the deciding factor.

thanks man. avantone is what i had in mind, based on the auratone said to be trying to be a bit hi-fi (sos reveiw). i was just gonna get watevr you D and kurt recommend or used. im thinking im gonna stick a black passive one on my dashboard w velcro, and bring it around w me. i think ill order it today or tomm. it could be the most portable world class monitor, lol.

either way, ill start with a single passive, and get an additional pair for the studio rig. maybe ill try both active and passive, for fun.

You won't regret it. They are built excellent and brilliant in how they push you in the midrange direction.

yeah im generally a tough sell if its not in the original package, unopened. my plan for this is to hook it up to a little car radio/BT receiver, which has 4x powered outs, and 4x pre- outs (non- powered), and an aux in 1/8". im going to use it as the head unit for a battery powered portable setup for camping or whatever. i got the radio for 20$ at wally world. i have an fm transmitter as well for fun! Kurt gave me the idea a few years ago. i scooped up a 19" screen that has a car adapter too, for a portable screen (720p). im prototyping w inexpensive off the shelf things and if its cool ill upgrade. eventually ill be slicker with the 'ol iron.

ive decided to finally learn how to mix mids. im starting with w mid out approach, to see how that works. get the burger right, before the bread. im not interested in high dollar nearfields. bigs and amps will seem to be best suited for that. i find i like cheap 6" nearfields as far as mix translation. 8" nearfields are super fun for listeing in an entertainment sense, but always flawed due to design limitations based on footprint.

i went to order a passive aurotone in gloss black a few hours ago, and several retailers cited a 'special order and no-return' policy on the cube. i had to re-think my order, and ended up finding a place that has them in stock, and has a normal return policy. also they sell em cheaper too! not the end of the GAS they have the yammy hs5's at a great discount (they give you 10% of your order back in the form of store credit). So along with the avantone, and eleven rack, ill be grabbing a yammy (one to start, then a pair, making the LCR for my basic surround setup). ive been eyeing this stuff for a while, actually ordered it even, but it fell thru last time. i just now ordered an alesis monitor 1 mk3, veinna key, and mic stand/mini camera attachment, today and informed the retailer about the 'special order' thing on the avantones. come to find out they actually had them in stock, but lost the sale due to the website being wrong. worked out in my favor as i stand to save $20 from the other place on the same avantone, when i order it later on.

Auratones, or the newer Avantones, are a good thing to have around, I think.
I have a pair myself, (though I do sometimes use them with a small sub) and I do use them for periodically checking, and, quite often, in mono as well, so you could probably get by with just one if that's your main goal.
I've never thought that they sounded "good", then again, they're not really supposed to, LOL. Similar to NS10's, at least in principle, they can be very helpful translationally.
As far as I know, Chris uses a pair, you could ask him what he thinks of them as well.
