Hi there

I've decided to opt for some outboard compression/limiting. This is due to the odd nasty spike I've gotten here and there on occasion (not that much might I add). However, this has occured on good vocal or guitar takes. As you can imagine, this has been pretty much unresolvablle after the fact leading to fresh takes being required.

I'm also about to do a bit of work with a local punk band who get a bit carried away at times. Therefore, although I have all the UAD doohickys (LA-2A 1176 etc), the smart decision for me now is to invest in some modest outboard comps with the express purpose being just to tame, in a limited capacity, any over-enthusiastic performances, preventing them from clipping and causing volume spikes.

Obviously, I'm currently taking all the necessary steps to limit my requirement for compression on the way in - i.e. steady performances, pop sheilds and sensible vocal technique etc. However, I think I'd be best with some outboards. I'm not looking to colour my sound in anyway. I am just looking to cap any silly goings on in my DAW software's dB level meter.

I'm about to get myself another Portico by summer time. Therefore, I'll have 4 channels of Neve by then. However, I'm not looking to spend similar cash to that spent on the porticos. Currently, I am looking at either:

2 x dbx 266XL
or
2 x dbx 166XL
or
2 x FMR RNC

Would any of these be the way to go for me? If so, which one? Or, would I be insulting my Portico Pres with these choices? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Lid
