Well,

Today I brought out my old Sony TC-788-4 to peel some vintage 60's recordings on 1/4 " 7 1/2 IPS tape to transfer them to digital. After cleaning and tweakin the old beast, I dropped on the Ray Charles reel and we listened to the tracks whilst dumpin them over. Man, all I can say is, even after almost 40 yrs. (yeah, the 60's are behind us  ) the sound jumpin off those tapes is stunning! Albeit the noise floor is way up, the stereo spread, and the quality of that voice just leaps out at you! Bloody inspiring!
Even the Miles (Kind Of Blue) sounded so damn good off that machine, it made me realize there IS something that tape will always have over vinyl or CD - that thick rich lustre is what I will continue to strive for, even if tracking on a different medium, in a different time.
