Protools is one possible route. You may get more bang for your buck with Cubase or Digital Performer, and any number of firewire interfaces out there. Decide on the program first and then find out which interfaces are compatable with it. Going with a program that uses VST plugs(Ie. all your virtual effects, eq's, compressors, instruments) will save you money over Protools propritary RTAS and TDM plugs. Then you will want a preamp, and mic. Both depend on taste and budget. You will also want monitors, either passive or active, which will also depend on budget and taste. Then you may want accoustical treatments for the room if its not sounding right to you. Keep in mind, this list can keep growing as your knowledge and experience do.
