I started a while back using M-Audio and I liked it for a while, started with a Fast Track then got an MBox2 with a PreSonus Mic Amp and I've always used a Macbook Pro.

I've been going to school for Audio about a year now and using the equipment there is so much better and has made the MBox2 look like a toy.

I don't like it anymore and need a new sound. I am upgrading my microphones but I don't know where to go really on the equipment. I have looked at a lot of Interfaces and Mixers and I/O equipment but I would like suggestions from some people in the field on what I should look into. My budget isn't GIGANTIC but I just want to get something that will be working in 3 years instead of shorting out or sounding like crap, or just sounding like crap from the start. I am eventually moving up to the Mac Pro but I just recently got a 2.0 Ghz MacbookPro running 8 GB of RAM so I would like to sit on this for a little bit.

So suggestions please?...

If you can stand it, you should wait. New Thunderbolt devices are in the air and would likely make anything you buy now obsolete. If you can't wait then there is the Impact Twin for small stuff or any of the EMu PCIe devices. For larger stuff RME or MoTU. Likely Thunderbolt will have adapters for 1394 units or USB units but that is still future unknowns.
