Can you give us some more info on the type of music/instr. that you track?

Quick notes:

Avalon 2022- fairly transparent, very low self noise, excellent on voice, acoustic guitar, drum overheads and horns.

Vintech 1272- fairly colored, thick, quiet enough for most work, excellent on electric guitar, bass cab/di, hard vocals, kick and snare.

They are really apples to oranges. Not completely different but not in the same genre'.

Give us more info and maybe we can confuse you some more.

The 1272 is much more of a colored, use with discretion, type of pre. If you run everything through it then more than likely you'll end up with a 2D/flat recording. Its a very bold pre! But it works best on just a few things to give that sense of being bold.

The AD2022 on the other hand is very clean and very transparent along with being very, very 3D. You really get a sense of the space with this pre.

If I could choose only one, then I would definately go with the 2022. It will be more versatile and serve in much more vareity of situations. Plus, you can always dirty/color a signal, but you can never clean a dirty/colored signal.
