I'm just finishing a track for a show - Carpenters - Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft, and have a new respect for Richard Carpenter's orchestrations - as in it's taken me three days so far, two bars at a time to pull out what each instrument and voice is actually playing - but that bits done. (I also wish they'd used a metronome as that would have made life much easier too - but that's just for me and the tempo track!)

I'm not into electro-music in any way so my VST folder has few effects type vocoders and the ones I've quickly downloaded, and fathomed out have left me a bit disappointed - so having gone through the free ones and found that they can use the amplitude of the keying signal to effect a synth sound, they can't really cope with formant following - like the old Sparky the Magic Piano and ELO's Mr Blue Sky. So now I'm going into the paid for versions - but there are so many to try.

Does anyone have a suggestion for one that can do the weird stuff in this song - from the Dalek like intro to the Sparky type sung stuff?

I don't mind paying - but downloading at random, waiting for emails for unlocking trials and then fighting with routing is killing me. Three hours this morning and no luck so far. Many of the ones getting good reviews are probably good for dance tracks, but useless for what I want!

Izotope have a new one out called VocalSynth...there is a free fully functioning 10-day trial...you just download it and away you go, no activating it.

I tried it for a few Kraftwerk covers I did, not bad, you can play with the parameters for different effects and its better than a lot of other ones on the market.

Thanks Sean - the demo examples sound good - BUT - downloaded the demo version - 10 days, and the sidechain enable button is greyed out, so the one thing I need it to do, the demo can't. I tried a nice sounding German one Versyn Matrix, but the demo installs on youe e-licenser, and guess what - it crashed trying to add the demo license! Luckily there was a remove tool that restored the e-licenser and Cubase works again!

The Izotope one sounds very good on it's internal synths - but without access to the side chain - I'm stuck. Unless I am just being stupid and to turn it on - you need to do something, but there are few actual menus and hidden things.
