I'm fairly new to the whole recording thing. I'm wondering what stuff I need to start building a basic home set-up, and what brands to go with. I've been hearing from one end "Mackie is the best", and then oh "Mackie sucks go with Roland". If anybody has any experience (which I'm pretty sure there are a couple of people who do), please through some useful advice my way. Thanks.

Buy the book Modern Recording Techniques by David Miles Huber. Thats the standard text for any recording school and its about $50. The book is updated almost every year to stay current. It has a wealth of information in it and shows alot of the gear that is currently on the market, this will help you make better purchase decisions.
