I would build a few gobos. 3 would do for this. For now you could use a heavy blanket. A moving blanket would work. There's a tutorial around here somewhere for building acoustic panels/bass traps.

I used to use large gobos all the time for this. It definitely gives you more control over the sound. It's not great for every application but if you want that close mic'd sound, this is a good way to get it.
