analog tapes [updating my point of view]

hi,
after a lot of lurking around, and some investigating, I've finally got my 2" 24 one week ago. It is a Tascam ATR80/24, with remote and auotlocator.
The audio shop where I bought it from, got me 4 used reels, absolutely unusable.
Anyway, I started to look for new tapes, to get a small archive, always ready to work.

Analog "God's (and Dinosaurs )" please report

Now that we have fallin to the pressure of the masses and purchased a 2" analog machine, I would like to ask for all of the little "Tips and Tricks" that everyone uses for tracking to analog tape. It has been many years (late 70's early 80's on eight track) since I used analog tape. (The lost years were spent in rehab :D ) and the last five or so have been using digital.

digital question from analog dinosaur

I readily admit being almost totally clueless about digital recording technologies. Not having to support a family from recording means being able to surround myself with my favorite toys, regardless of whether they are practical, efficient or cost effective. I can happily play with my 30 and 40 year old analog toys, totally ignorant of the world passing me by.

non hernia analog 2 track for classical?/my DSD experien

Hi everyone,

So does anyone have any suggestions about a non-hernia, bad ass, two track reel-to-reel for less (hopefully way less) than $14k? I was wondering what people used to use back in the day for stereo Classical recording in the field (in the days before dat)... I already have two channels of dolby SR lying around the house...

analog recording

I am doing a paper on why analog sounds better than digital for certain types of music such as rock, hip hop ,funk and blues. What are some major factors that make analog sound better than digital? Why would a band want to go through the extra trouble to record to analog and then master the recording digitally? Why does digital make music sound grainy?

analog mixdown decks

The gear forum has vanished, so I'll try again here. Looking into purchasing a good solid analog mixdown deck in the (relatively) near future. An ATR would be beyond my means or my needs, I believe, and I've already been told solid machines can be found for under $1000, maintenance and setup included. 1/4" 15 ips is fine by me, which makes the pickings pretty easy.
