I am trying to figure out how the side-chain portion of the gate works. The "manual" is useless, but I guess you get what you pay for :-O

The problem is that I'm not sure how to "route" a signal to the side-chain input.

I'm pretty new to digital recording/mixing and I don't have a long track record recording/mixing with analog gear either (But I'm 61 and been an analog guy...guit player, live sound hack... since I was 11). I tracked a live band for recording/mixing practice a while back. Since then I've tried every thing I could to clean up the tracks using gating and EQ.

A device designed to decrease the level of low level signals and increase the level of high level signals, thus increasing the dynamic range of the signal.

Hello all, I am a baritone bass vocalist and would like to improve my sound. I am using a standard handheld wired dynamic mic, and I'd like to incorporate my Peavey CEL-2 (Compressor Expander Limiter) into the chain. My projection is often over powering (causing distortion) and my soft parts are sometimes hardly audible.

Would someone kinldly tell me the uses/ applications of expanders?

I have a Behringer MX9000. I have an Alesis HD24. What is the best/easiest method of using all 24 tracks of the HD24? I have 16 tracks through the 8-bus and internal patching of the MX9000. Should I go Direct Out, Mix-B (which I am totally not understanding fully when it comes to the recording/playback routing side of things), or just use the Expander port and add a little mixer? Or what?

I have six mics on drums in PTLE. I use the expander/gate plugin on each track except the two cond overheads to narrow down just the snare or kick or toms, etc. First, off is that what most of you pro's do to get that separation?

Out of all the Fx I use, Noise gates are the one that give me so much trouble. Compressors are usually the culprits in any novices set up...

I always try to record dry, no fx no compression.
Other people I have spoken too put FX on things... OK I might record with compression on Bass guitar, but thats about as far as it goes...
