Frequencies and Mic Placement

Hey everybody, my name is Nick and I'm an aspiring drummer and recording engineer/producer.

I'm going to be recording some drum tracks soon and I have been told that if mics are placed incorrectly then the frequencies will cancel each other out and effect the sound you are getting. What are the guidelines you guys follow as far as mic placement goes.

Frequency Cancellation?

Does anyone have any insight on frequency cancellation as it pertains to an entire mix. I think I might be experiencing it between the lead vocal and the guitars in one of my mixes. The guitars don't play during the verse and the lead vocal sounds nice and full, but when the guitars come in on the chorus the lead vocal sounds a little thin.

Roll Off Frequencies

Hi, I'm a producer making a style of music smilar to drum and bass and i was wondering what frequency i should be rolling my basses off.

When i roll of at 50hz i get an increase in headroom which makes a better mix

but

when i roll of at 30Hz my Yamaha msp5's show a noticable difference in the bottom end, it sounds more full.
