Drums signal level too hot!

I am trying to obtain a signal level of -20dBFS to -12dBFS at the input channel on Cubase 5, using the Focusrite Octopre Dynamic MkII mic preamp . The problem that I am having is with the recording of the drum tracks. The signal level that I am getting at the input bus is -1dBFS to -3dBFS even though my gains are set at zero on the mic preamp.

Headroom Explained?

Can anybody example the concept of headroom and give any suggestions on to gaining some more headroom with my tracking chain?
My chain is:
RODE NT1000 --> PreSonus TubePRE --> dbx 266XL --> Mbox 2 --> Pro Tools LE (Windows Vista/ 2GB RAM)

Someone said that I was having some tracking issues and the lack of headroom was one of the issues.

Recording orchestra in a pit for the "Nutcracker Suite"...Just in time for Christmas!

I have been hired to record the Nutcracker Suite for a TV broadcast for a local PBS station. Since most every one knows that particular Suite I am not listing the instrumentation here. The orchestra will be in a pit and I'm limited in being able to suspend any mics due to camera angles, etc. Any suggestions on how to get the best sound for this show?

Recording drums for deathcore/metal band next saturday...any words of wisdom?

Im an audio/video student in northern illinois, my band is tracking drums for our demo and I just wanted to see what kind of advice everyone could throw at me. I plan to close mic toms/snare/kick (2 mics on kick, a bd mic near the outer rI'm and an sm57 near the beaters to get the "click" that us metalheads love) and then doing x-y Micing for the overheads.

How do I record an orchestra?

Hello everyone, I am new here.

Not having the budget to hire a sound engineer, I have been asked to record my orchestras upcoming concert. I've tried to pick up as much as I can but don't get a really good sound. Can I please get some pointers about how best to record a symphony orchestra with the following equipment:

composition/midi

Greetings to all. It's been a few years since I worked on music compositions but have recently obtained a few composition jobs. This past summer I simply wrote out string/ guitar, oboe, & bass parts and either played them myself or had others play them while recording on pro tools (G3 5.1). I used to use Studio Vision in the old days and transfer midi tracks into Pro Tools.

Preamps n Stuff

My recordings still sound cold-blooded, at least to my ears. I'm looking to breathe a little life into them, as well as the lush harmonic quality of a preamp. I'm not blindsided by tube seduction, so solid state will do just fine.

1. I want one especially for my guitar recordings. I intend on putting it after the SM57 that is in front of my amp and before my PreSonus Firebox.
