Being that this is a budget gear forum,I would like responses to be within the $100-$150 range. Yes, the more expensive the better, but I record as a hobby (stress relief), not professional. Personal experience would be great. I will be using this in a DAW set up running Adobe Audition 1.5 going straight into a Audiophile 2496 soundcard.

It's an age-old topic, but I wanted to consult the people that read this thread. I have a lot of respect for you because of your courtesy, your discerning ears, and your preference for clean sounds.

I would love to be in the market for a preamp, but that requires money. However, I would like to purchase a very nice preamp or two after I finish my current album projects.

Does anyone know if it's possible to bypass the preamps in a Firepod? I've got some other preamps I want to use and the pre's on the Firepod limit me getting the full range on my external pre's. Anyone know how?

I just finished a tracking session with some of the local kids (I call them kids, they're like 21 and 22) while using some of the gear I have been sent to review.

I'm considering a Neve 1073, and a UA 1176LN compressor. Any idea how this signal path would sound with a u87ai on vocals. Recording mainly rap, reggae and r&b vocals.

Any recomendations for the u87 mic? preamps or comps.

I currently use the Avalon 737sp. I got some extra cash now and i know i can get something a lot better out there.

I've recently upgraded my mic locker. Seems it is time to get a few really good channels of mic preamps for the main mics. The intended usage is on-location recording of classical music. I have 8 channels of decent mic preamps already. My mics are all SDC.

I was noticing that when I turn on my power strip/surge protector to get power to my AD2022, the channel 1 VU meter dances up and down real hard. Is this a problem, or can the preamp be damaged by this. Hell, the preamp doesn't have a pwer switch, and if I turn the input to lowest level, it still dances around. Any thoughts?

I wonder if i ever need a separate mic preamp since the Soundcraft Compact 10 mixer has built-in Class-A preamp.

I am trying to connect my mic (RODE K2) to my PreAmp (The Brick) into my Compressor (RNC) into my Digi002.

Here's where I'm not sure what to do...

The output from the Brick is balanced (XLR). The RNC however only takes in unbalanced inputs. So how do I unbalance my connection so I can use these two peices of gear together?
