I recently asked a question about the Buzz MA 2.2 and Millennia HV-3 for recording of acoustic based music (with vocals) on another forum. From my limited experience, which is essentially with Lynn Funston's Pre CD, I found the Buzz to be warmer/less open than the HV-3. I like the clearer more open and transparent sound of the HV-3.

Excuse my ignorance, but I own 2 mic preamp-amps, an ART Tube MP and a Studio Projects VTB-1 and on both units there are levels for input and output.
usually when recording I set both input and output
at 12:00 o'clock. Is this a good idea, or are there some hard, fast rules for these settings?

i mainy produce r&b and hip hop .. i track most of my stuff now with a u87ai and or cad m9 through a valley audio 401 or Aphex 207. sounds good but it need great.
i'm looking at getting the Focusrite isa430MkII or the A-designs mp1 with a nice comp(distressor)

I was recording my singer, Mattie, in the basement the other night for the first time in months.

First my setup:

Blue Baby Bottle
Speck MicPre 5.0
RNC
Speck ASC EQ
> A/D converter (S/PDIF)>Echo Mia

So, the signal was pretty hot. I engaged the
20dB pad on the Speck MicPre and boosted the input gain accordingly.

I have a line on a used dbx 586 two channel tube preamp.
Anyone have any experience with this unit?
Is it a halfway descent tube pre?

Hey Guys! After talking with many of you about gear I narrowed my preamp decision to a Great River pre that sells for $1075 but...today I stopped by a local dealer and the manager wants to blow out his Avalon M5's for $720 because he doen't want to carry them anymore. I wanted to get a Great River because many of you are thrilled with them and said that they are an awesome all around pre.

Any one ever heard of a griffen preamp ? I saw one at the NAMM show ( Not Available Maybe in May )
They didn't have a booth there but this preamp was at a chinese mic booth ! they were useing the preamp to show off their mics. I wasn't interested in the mics, but the preamp looked well made. I believe it was manufactured in sweeden.
