Description

A preamplifier, also known as a preamp, is an electronic amplifier that converts a weak electrical signal into an output signal strong enough to be noise-tolerant and strong enough for further processing, or for sending to a power amplifier and a loudspeaker. Without this, the final signal would be noisy or distorted.

DIY Preamp

Anyone here ever "roll their own" mic preamp? I've come across several links on the web that seem great for this sort of thing...My interest was piqued when an electrical engineer buddy of mine cracked open a very hi end pre and said.."this design is really simple and the parts can't be more than 200$" I think I will take the plunge. I have nothing to lose but power to my house!

Matching mics with mic preamps

I've been wondering this for awhile. Everyone's ideal studio, from what I've been reading on this board, would include at least 6-10 different mics and 3-5 different mic preamps (probably the more, the better). How do you know which mic/mic preamp combination works best for a given singer? Surely you wouldn't have that singer try every mic/mic preamp combination.

Preamps for under 1k

Hey guys/gals. I have a modest home studio and I'm looking to get a good solid-state pre for around 1k. I own a hhb radius 40 and a 50 (both tube) and a Joemeek vc6, but I'd like something better. The hhbs are ok on most stuff, but when recording 'heavier' guitars (which I do a lot) they are way to bright and brittle. I've had people tell me to look into Summit, Grace, FMR, etc.
