Preamp Tube Shootout
I recently invested in a few different tubes for my amp which only has room for a single preamp tube, the rest is solid state. I thought I'd share my findings with you. I could hear and feel a pretty nominal difference while playing through the amp, but to be honest I strain to hear the difference in the recordings, maybe your experience will be different.

Capacitor Shootout
I recently did some comparisons of some popular capacitors for the electric guitar and I thought I would share the results with you. I tested poly film caps which are the little green rectangles that have been the standard on fender strats for over twenty years. I also tested ceramic discs which are a bit more modern or so I'm told.

Ribbon Shootout?
Well, Blue Microphones is offering a $200 rebate on their Woodpecker ribbon mic. Tom Bethel and others have given this mic good reviews. I've been thinking about getting a better ribbon lately since my Cascade Fat Head II ribbons have been doing working out surprisingly well on acoustic instruments. I'd like to see if I can get that "ribbony" smoothness in a more precise mic.

a brief shootout: sm57, md421, i5
very unscientific, but i did get all mics as close to coincident as reasonably possible. signal chain:
mic -> onyx 1640 -> firewire -> tracktion -> normalized -> .aiff file

Okay, so I'm really referencing another recent topic, but since it's buried in there, I thought I'd open this one and point some people to it.
Gaff - feel free to delete this after a couple days if you'd like once people start going to the shootout.
