Why oh why do speakers need to be USB? My computer comes with a line out and if that's occupied it also has a heaphone out. OK...the audio interface...gimmick.

I vote no. Sure, they have a cheap price and they have an audio interface but that's exactly why I vote no. Cheap small speakers generally sound small and cheap. The USB 1.1  audio interface that doesn't require any drivers will probably cause plenty of latency making it not fun to use when recording.

I don't know if these are good or not. I don't know of anything better (or worse) in the $100 range...but if you want to be even a little bit serious about recording, start with a decent pair of monitors.

They have a 3 inch "woofer" ... 3 inch "woofer" ... We like to pretend that size doesn't matter but 3 inches! That's practically a tweeter. (and I agree with Program on the latency and an extra D to A that you pay for and don't need)

Wouldn't drive my speakers trough the USB-suppository.

Proper monitoring requires proper power levels. USB cannot deliver. I like powered monitors but I also like sizable power amplifiers & passive monitors. I don't know? I think it's a power thingy? While I'm not a princess, you'll never find me without my Crown.

Just remember that computer speakers are toy devices. They're not intended for critical monitoring nor should they be used as such. Sure, it's another reference you want to hear. It's just not something you can trust. That's why recording engineers use recording studio monitors. There's something about that title "recording studio" that transcends USB computer speakers. There is also this factor called consistency. We get consistency with control room monitors. There's nothing like having a good pair of monitors. Or for that matter, 7 pairs since I have numerous places I listen & monitor. I really only have 2 different pairs. The rest are all identical, in different rooms. Like I said, consistency. Except for, perhaps, my inconsistent recommendations?
