Can you use all 8 inputs on the back of the digi 002 at the same time? that being the 4 xlr and 4 quarter inches?

Yes, you can use up to 18 if you use the ADAT and the S/PDIF.
  3. i used all eight in the digi001 so 002 can handle if your hard drive is acting up you have a other problems then protools.

Yes, you can use the XLRs and the .5" at the same time. I do it regularly. I havn't been able to get the S/PIDF to work simultaniously, but the band decided not to play with the CD anyway and I was saved that embarassment.

Aren't there clocking issues involved with using both the ADAT and S/PDIF simultaneously? Digi claims you can do 18, but not without limitations - from what I understand.

To use the Lightpipe and the SPDIF at the same time, you have to be using one master clock for both, so you either need a device that has both, or set up to clock one A/D form the other or another master clock for both.
