Any thoughts on this acoustic mix?

    This is my first real attempt at an acoustic song, let me know what you think. (I'm aware that the background singer can't sing)

    Honestly, the guitar sounds thin and I had trouble finding the chorus. Maybe add some dynamics, change the rithme in the chorus.

    I'm only a newbie, but it might not hurt to try recording the same guitar track twice, pan 1 right and pan the 2nd left, it may give it a bigger sound.
    I know it requires good playing and discipline to play the same thing exactly the same twice, but that can't be a bad thing can it? I don't mean
    just duplicate the track in your DAW, as that doesn't have the same effect.
    I'm sure the pro's will be along soon to give you better advice.

    p.s Loved the 'Trees' track that was next on your playlist.

    Reasons to record

    then why did you record him in the first place, let alone post it for us to hear? facepalm

    you have to take a step back once in a while and ask yourself "why do i want to record this?" :confused:

    is it a really good song? is it a really good performance of a really good song? is it a really good player or band, playing a really good performance of a really good song?

    if the answer to any of the above questions is "NO" then don't waste your time.

    Kurt might be a bit harsh in honesty but he has a good point in saying you should present the best you can do. Starting with excuses is a proof it wasn't the case here.
    Take the time to read the forum tips on how to record instruments/voice, mic placement, EQing and all the mix tips. Then ask specific first, like ''how can I make my guitar sound better'' or ''what's the compressor's threshold you normally use on an acoustic guitar''

    Taking time to read what's already here can benefit you and me greatly. Even if I recorded a bunch of albums in the last 10years, I'm still learning to push my limits in understanding all the tools available and when not to use any ! ;)

    When I answer a thread, I don't expect the person to be the best on the planet cause that person wouldn't be here asking questions. (I guess)
    A good song is very hard to define because there's a lot of emotions and taste entering the judgement.
    Making the difference between a good mix and a bad mix is a lot easier. Make sure you hear everything in context (it should feel as it is in the same room with some symbiosis to how the instruments frequencies fit together, taking their places without masking others)
    Wow, I'm gonna print that one out and hang it up my studio's window !! :)

    After listening to this one and another song you posted, I would say that you need to improve your monitoring situation... for one thing, your mixes lack low-end clarity.

    Also, with this song, the delay on the vocal doesn't work. You need to experiment more to get a delay time that fits the song better.

    delays should be in time with the beat of the song. i want to try to get past the performance thing and try to give some tips on the mix but it is hard to get into the mix when other elements distract.

    i will point out that anything you record should serve the song first , not just be something to show off. this is just my opinion.

    listening right now to "painting painting" ... the tempo changes are weird but this song is way better than the other stuff of yours i have heard so far. in time, in pitch, and i can hear all the instruments pretty good. the single note guitar part on the chorus provides a nice counterpoint. this is the best of the bunch and the one you should be presenting to people. try punching up the bass a bit by boosting 225 hz a bit with a narrow Q. that really make the bass come through on small speakers.

    "for elise" ... again hard for me suggest any improvements when so much work is needed in the arrangement and performances. perhaps some judicious application of pitch correction is in order? if you are going to continue to record bands like this you might want to get into some serious time correction editing ...
