One problem I have is tracking slap bass, particularly bass tracks which are finger picked throughout with slap decorations. The slaps cause quick spikes. What are some recommended methods for getting a smooth yet dynamic sound out of slap bass tracks? How do guys like Marcus get such perfect balance between easy legato phrases and hard slaps without sounding squashed?

    Thanks.

A limiter. Most good bass amps have one built in. Slap bass yearns for all sorts of compression.

Proper compression settings? Improved player technique?
