  1. A friend has a Boss BR-1600 and wants to send a few songs for me to mix on Protools. Does any one know if the Boss can back up a song and let me see individual tracks in Protools 7 ?

I'm not intimately familiar with that unit but since it has a built-in optical disk burner, one would only have to take each song and have your friend burn individual tracks, separately as CD and/or DVD's. A little tedious but then you could rip each disk individually into your computer and then load each one individually into your multitrack software timelines.

i did this exact thing not long ago
you can extract each individual track via usb
    pretty easy
the br 1600 is VERY slow but
it was super slow when i did it seeing i was extracting 8 tracks that were 2 hours long each (from a live recording)
    it took all day
