I recently got a copy of Cubase LE, but I cant figure out how to view the waveform. All that comes up in the track when I record something is a black box that contains the audio.

I would expect LE does not have a waveform editor(as some of the higher-end apps do). LE is a toned-down app to entice you to upgrade. I have SE 3 (excellent BTW) and it has a wave editor.

Since your software doesn't have a "sound editor" you could look into the following freeware:

    Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

    Wavosaur(VST) http://www.wavosaur.com/

    Aldos Wav edit http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/WAVEdit/

You can download the Cubase LE manual here:

    ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/Download/Cubase_LE_1/Docs_English

    Another good resource is http://www.steinbergusers.com

LE is pretty impressive for what it is, but they do have an upgrade program now if you got LE bundled with an audio device.

I use Cubase 4 as well and it's incredible. Steinberg also offers educational discounts on its products, so if you're a student or you know a teacher, any teacher, public school to university, you can take advantage of this discount, Which means you can get Cubase 4 for less than half price.
