For less artifcial noise which is more important...

    Input or Output.

    Ive got a Sharp MT15. It has a mic in with plug in power 3v?

    Would buying a battery module for my stereo electret condenser microphone so I can use it in my quieter line in give me less noise than Transfering audio via D/A A/D on a consumer sound card (sound blaster live 5.1)?
    Of course there will be generation loss.

    Basicly im wondering weather I should invest money into a battery module for mics so I can use a quieter LINE IN, or should I be more concerned about getting an MD deck with an optical out and getting an audio i/o with spdif/toslink to perfectly copy it...

    (over time I will have it all obviously, but what should I start with)

    Simplified: What causes more artificial noise?
    a) Crappy plug in power on an MD.
    b) D/A A/D dubbing.

    Well that's alittle bit like asking whats worse a bad cable or a bad recording of a bad cable. Power supplies are one of the biggest culprits on trashing a digital signal chain, but since the power supply in question will be in use regardless it really is moot to go outside of it. If you are recording "IN the Box" so to speak a good formua for design is this:
    Room + Good Mic + Good mic Pre + Great A/d converters. Now if you are primarily recording synths then cable/power supply can be an issue. But I would start at one end of the formula and work to the other...
