i completed the build of my new ANUS :) . i installed XP and then went down your optimization menu line by line (man, you have to wonder what's keeping the OS up and running after all that). i am having one minor problem now. whenever i close an MMC (doesn't matter which one 'Administrative Tools', 'Disk Management', etc.) i get an 'application error' dialog box with a memory address. i can close this dialog box and nothing further seems to happen but it's annoying. i am away from that PC right now and can't remember exactly what the messgage said but it happens everytime. did i miss something or go too far?
btw - i used Norton Ghost for the my first time after i optimized (even with error above). i wish i had used this tool long ago. one question though. are there any paprticular flags/switches that you have found useful that you set when you ghost your box? one last question. with all of your experience. if you were using an ATA133 60gig drive with an ATA133 Controller for audio (a) would you format it with more than one partition and (b) what cluster size would you use?
sorry for all the questions but you don't know how hard it's been to find a place where you feel comfortable about the information you're getting. i truly appreciate this forum and the time you take with it.
although i am specifically addressing Opus, this is not to exlude others. I welcome, with gratitude, input from anyone who wants to take the time to reply. after all that is what makes this place so valuable.

Hmmm...strange indeed...can't say that I have come across that one yet...give me the exact message that you get and let me see what I can find out for you...Did you change any Voltage settings for memory or CPU in the BIOS? Are you Overclocking? Have you tried it at normal speed if OC'd? etc etc etc...
    XP home or pro version?

a generic, straight up install. no OC'ing, no voltage changes.

the error dialog box reads as:

    mmc.exe - Application Error
The instruction At "0x77f5171c" referenced at "0x00830010", the memory could not be "read".
Click OK to terminate the program.

i'm not sure what i could have set or changed that would have caused this.

    dan...what programs have you installed?
I went ahead and redid my work computer today and got rid of the dual boot thang I had with Win2k and XP..went solely to WinXP..now, my computer is the Norton Corporate AntiVirus Server for my entire office building..I control all AntiVirus settings and scans and so forth from my machine..it installs a center which uses the MMC..that type of issue happened to me today..so I don't think it's any of the tweaks so to speak..
I simply reinstalled the center thang and all was well...
Let me know what programs you have installed and maybe we can narrow it down some

well O, it turns out that it's the Matrox 550/450 drivers for XP. i started from scratch last night and proceeded to install all my hardware drivers and tested mmc after each install. i kept looking thru your doc and didn't see anything there that i thought would cause this. it was after i installed video drivers/tools that the problem reappeared. i went to the matrox web site (to look for newer drivers) and went into their forum searched on 'management console' and sure enough others are experiencing this same problem. apparently the bug has been reported but has been assigned a low priority. it seems it only happens when you set 'Save/Restore' window positions in the matrox powerdesk. a minor frustration  i can live with for now. btw, there is a newer driver but it doesn't resolve this.

Yup..I knew it wasn't anything on my document..see I don't use that save feature on my power desk for my G550...I never do anything of that nature...
    Only at work! lol!
Glad to see it was resolved tho..or at least discovered what it was
