Can the Masterlink act as the master and shoot clock out the digital outs to a external da?My da(Lucid) has no wordclock input it gets it's clock via the digital input.Any help would be great.

The ML probably IS acting as the master clock for the Lucid when the ML outs are feeding the Lucid.

more info please! What are you wanting to do / set up?

I dont use a board I have the 2 mix from Pro Tools going aes into the Lucid da and for play back from the masterlink I would also like to spdif to the da to listen back.I do not want to do this at the same time of course.I do not want to have to get a Coleman box if I dont have to.The signal from the Lucid is clean and accurate to my ears..

All I really need to know is,can the ML distribute clock out the spdif port.I have not purchased one yet and it dosn't tell you in the manual.

Recording = PT AES out - to ML AES input, (no need for Lucid in the chain here)

Monitoring can be via ML outputs (fine)

or if you want, via a 3rd party d/a like Lucid (potentialy more DeLuxe sounding)

Please give us the model of Lucid you have or are thinking of buying so we can look into the clocking potential of the whole PT / ML / Lucid system.

Ok,I have a Lucid da/2496 it's input are as follows aes in,spdif in,no word clock. Going to the aes in is my Pro Tools 2 mix from the 96 I/O all I need to know is if the ML is capable of word clock distribution via the spdif out acting as a Master.

Typically most mixdown decks (including the Masterlink) and DA converters (including the Lucid DA9624) don't have dedicated word clock inputs. They get their timing via the incoming digital audio stream. There isn't much loss associated with this, particularly if there's a master clock upstream. Looking at the back panel of the Masterlink on the Alesis site it appears that it might pass audio through its digital i/o. If so, you could go from the PT 2-bus to the ML and then out via AES to the Lucid DA. This would allow you to monitor recordings in the ML and sessions in Pro Tools. If it doesn't nominally pass audio through, try this: AES out of PT into ML, then AES into the Lucid. This is your monitpr ML chain. Normal monitoring can be accomplished via s/pdif out of PT into the DA9624 which has 3 digital inputs that can be selected from the front panel. The Masterlink will send timing info when it plays back. It may, and I have no experience with this, always be sensitive to digital input and be controlled by system clock in playback. But if it's playing a CD that was recorded in a system that was clocked you'll have a better quality CD as the final product.

Jim I get what your saying the question in your case will it nominally pass audio,if so it would be great for my application. When we are done with a session everybody always wants a cd I could just pop them in burn and send them on there way to perfect there parts,no bounce to disk,no toast :) and I would still have a constant Lucid da which I like plenty.
    Thanks for the input...

Favorite is to be able to a/b (switching back & forwards quickly) your mix to a CD

    Via the SAME d/a
    Via the SAME wordclock

Now I am going to regret mentioning that because you are going to ask me how to do it with your gear!

(perhaps spdif in to Lucid = PT, AES input into Lucid = Masterlink, PT getting clock from Masterlink (SPDIF out feeding PT SPDIF in, PT on ext clock selecting SPDIF in..(but dont listen to the ins just have em selected) Can you hop between AES & SPDIF inputs on the Lucid? If so that would be your A/B AND mixing set up.

    give it a whirl!
