Outboard EQ or Software EQ?

I am thinking of getting an external EQ such as Speck.

Until now I have been using Metric Halo's Channel Strip as a software solution to EQ. I try and focus on getting a great sound first from good mic placement and a great recording chain (Microtech Gefell/Schoeps - DAV BG) and have hoped that this will mean less work at the mastering end and so far this has been a good philosophy. But still, there are times when I do need to apply EQ.

So, will something like Speck give me significantly better results than Metric Halo Channel strip or do you have to start thinking of some serious money before you get a "musical" and clean EQ?

Any other suggestions for a great external EQ?

    Hey Rob!

I think your head is in the right place. The MH eq is pretty nice, I think you'd have to drop some serious $$$ t get much better. (Think Crane Song or Millennia for what you're doing.)

However, if you are still serious about a new EQ, consider the UAD card. Both the precision EQ and the Pultec Pro are worth your computer's weight in gold.

The precision is as clean and accurate of a digital EQ as you'll get shy of a Weiss. (I prefer it over the algorithmix EQs.) The pultec imparts a definite signature but more often than not it's quite flattering. IMO the Pultec could sell for $799 and it would still be a value. The fact that it's only 1/10th that cost makes it stupid cheap...(granted you have to buy the card, but it's still worth it.)

Wait...don't tell me this is for a laptop....

Thanks for your kind words and also for suggesting an avenue I had not even considered.

I dont know much about UAD so I will definitely look into it. I suppose there are real advantages too in not having another bit of outboard gear.

Another EQ I was circling was the Lil FrEQ. Seems to pack a lot into one box and at a very high level of performance.
